DATES (תָּמָר֒, H9469). Dates as such, are not mentioned, though they are by inference—for the palm trees described are obviously date palms (Phoenix dactylifera.)

The harmful “strong drink” referred to (Prov 20:1) is prob. date brandy. On the other hand, the date honey of 2 Chronicles 31:5 would do nothing but good. Long-lasting dried dates were handy to carry on long camel journeys across the deserts.

Dates are borne in huge clusters—these hang down among the leaves. The fruits are the main food of some Arabian tribes. See also Palm Tree; Food.
