Deck

DECK. 1. “Deck” is used as a verb in the sense of “cover, adorn, beautify, bedeck, decorate, ornament.” Heb. and Gr. verbs denoting this are עָדָה֮, H6335, cover or adorn oneself, יָפָה, H3636, beautify, adorn; κοσμέω, G3175, adorn; cf. also כָּהַן, H3912, עָשָׂה֒, H6913, רָבַד, H8048, χρυσόω, G5998. For typical occurrences, cf. Isaiah 61:10; Revelation 17:4; 21:2.

2. “Deck” also refers to the deck of a ship, providing a floor for the space above and a roof for the space underneath. In Genesis 6:16, after “lower, second, and third,” RSV supplies “decks,” KJV “stories.” Thus, Noah’s ark had three decks. In Ezekiel 27:6 קֶ֫רֶשׁ, H7983, board(s) or plank(s) (of a deck), is rendered “deck” in RSV (KJV “benches”). The reference is to Tyre appropriately under the figure of a ship.
