Didymus

DIDYMUS dĭd’ ə məs (Δίδυμος, G1441, twin). This designation, another name for the Apostle Thomas, appears only in the gospel of John (11:16; 20:24; 21:2). The Gr. form, Θωμᾶς, G2605, is a transliteration of תּﯴאֲמִים, H9339, meaning ‘twin” (Gen 25:24; 38:27; Song of Solomon 4:5; 7:3). Probably the Gr. equivalent, Didymus, was used among Gr.-speaking friends of Thomas. Each time the word is used in John, it is preceded by the word λεγόμενος, which does not mean, “Thomas who is commonly called Didymus.” The theory that Jesus gave him this name because of his twofold nature, divided between doubt and faith, seems to be pure invention. More likely the designation refers to the simple fact that Thomas (q.v.) was a twin.
