DIVES dī’ vez (πλούσιος, G4454, rich). The name traditionally given to the rich man in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). Actually, his name is nowhere given in the parable. Vulgate trs. πλούσιος, G4454, by “dives,” “rich,” “wealthy.” The use of “Dives” by the 3rd cent. is seen in the Lat. tr. of Irenaeus (Against Heresies, II xxxiv. 1). See Lazarus and Dives.
