DOCTOR (διδάσκαλος, G1437, teacher; νομοδιδάσκαλος, G3791, teacher of the law). The KJV rendering of διδάσκαλος, G1437, in Luke 2:46 (ASV, RSV “teacher”), and the KJV, ASV rendering of νομοδιδάσκαλος, G3791, in Luke 5:17 (RSV “teachers”) and Acts 5:34 (RSV “teacher”). The word διδάσκαλος, G1437, is the common word for “teacher” in secular and NT Gr. The word νομοδιδάσκαλος, G3791, however, is not found in secular Gr. or in the LXX, but occurs only in Christian writings. The pl. is rendered “teachers of the law” (1 Tim 1:7). It is not of Jewish origin, although the linguistic basis of the term is found in the formula τὸ̀ν νόμον διδάσκειν, “to teach the law.” The word “doctor” is simply Lat. for “teacher.” In Old Eng. the word “doctor” also meant “teacher,” and it is so used in the passages given above. The VSS of Wyclif, Tyndale, Geneva, and Rheims use the word “doctor”; all modern VSS use “teacher.” The “teachers of the law” (1 Tim 1:7) were not Judaizers, but men who corrupted the law of Moses by allegorical interpretations and whittled away its moral precepts. Some scholars hold them to be incipient Gnostics.
