Doorkeeper

DOORKEEPER (see [http://biblegateway/wiki/Port, Porter PORTER]) (θυρωρός, G2601, John 18:16, 17) KJV and ASV PORTER. A person who guarded the entrance to public buildings, temples, city walls, etc. A woman is mentioned as doorkeeper of the palace of Ishbosheth (RSV following the LXX, 2 Sam 4:6). The doorkeeper of a rich man’s house is mentioned by Jesus as an example of one who watches faithfully (Mark 13:34). A doorkeeper might guard the entrance of a sheepfold (John 10:3, RSV GATEKEEPER). A maid kept the door of the courtyard of the high priest the night Jesus was on trial (18:16, 17). To be a lowly doorkeeper of the Temple is preferred to a life of wickedness (֭הִסְתּﯴפֵף, “to act as doorkeeper,” Ps 84:10). “Doorkeeper” is used sometimes in KJV and ASV to tr. שׁﯴעֵ֣ר, “gatekeeper,” q.v.
