Dust

DUST (עָפָר, H6760, אָבָק, H85, דַּק, H1987, fine dust, שַׁ֫חַק, H8836, also cloud; κονιορτός, χοῦς). עָפָר, H6760, is the most common, referring to loose earth, soil, powder. It was thrown upon the head as a sign of mourning (Josh 7:6), but could serve to indicate abundance collectively (Gen 13:16). Man was made of dust (Gen 2:7; 1 Cor 15:47-49) and, at death, returns to dust (Gen 3:19; Job 10:9). אָבָק, H85, is dust which caused boils in Egypt (Exod 9:9). It could refer to thin clouds at God’s feet (Nah 1:3), similar to שַׁ֫חַק, H8836.
