Fishhook

FISHHOOK. Several Heb. terms are tr. “fishhook” or “hook” by modern trs. The word חַכָּ֣ה is used in Job 41:1, Isaiah 19:8, and in Habakkuk 1:15, to refer to the “fishhook” proper. This method of fishing was widely used in the ancient world, although it was not an important industry in Pal. Other terms used are derived from words for “thorns” or “spines” of various plants which were used for fishing or for gaffing fish. In Amos 4:2, the term סִירֹ֥ות דּוּגָֽה, “spines for fishing” uses the word סִירָה, H6106, which refers to the thorn of the Thorny Burnet (Poterium Spinosum). In Job 41:2 the word חﯴחַ֒, H2560, “thorn, spine” is used with the meaning “hook.” KB identifies it in this passage as a “thorn put into the gills of a fish to carry it home.”
