Flask

FLASK. The Eng. word “flask” was not used by the KJV trs., but several of the modern trs. have used it to render a number of Heb. words without much agreement or uniformity. It is used by the RSV and other modern trs. to render the Heb. word פַּ֣כְ (2 Kings 9:1, 3; in 1 Sam 10:1 the same word is tr. “vial” by the RSV and other modern VSS). Jeremiah 19:1, 10 (RSV) uses it for בַקְבֻּ֖ק, although other modern trs. use “jar” or “jug” in this passage and the same word in 1 Kings 14:3 is rendered by the RSV as “jar.” At least one modern VS has used “flask” for אָס֥וּכְ (2 Kings 4:2) and for צַפָּ֑חַת (1 Kings 17:12, 14, 16). The difficulty in tr. such terms is a dual one: (1) the words used are so rare or their meanings so difficult to determine, that one does not know the exact connotation of the word; and (2) even when one knows the connotation more exactly, there is no Eng. word with the same range of meaning.
