Fodder

FODDER (בְּלִיל, H1173, meaning mixed fodder or mash for domestic animals Job 6:5; 24:6; Isa 30:24. Verb form found in Judg 19:21). This word is used in the OT for the food of donkeys or oxen. It was usually mixed from that which remained after a crop had been harvested and threshed. Isaiah 30:24 indicates the practice of salting the mixture in order to fulfill the animals’ salt needs. In some VSS this Heb. word is tr. as “provender” (RSV Isa 30:24).
