FOREHEAD (מֵ֫צַח, H5195, μέτωπον, G3587, literally meaning between the eyes). The use of the word “forehead” in the OT conveys several meanings. It is used in a literal sense (Exod 28:38) when Aaron was instructed to wear the plate of pure gold on his forehead. Likewise in 1 Samuel 17:49 and 2 Chronicles 26:19, 20 it is used in a literal sense to refer to specific wounds or leprous marks on the forehead. A fig. use (Ezek 3:8, 9) illustrates that the direction of the forehead shows determination or defiance.

In the NT all the references are in the Book of Revelation. They refer to the fig. or literal marks, seals, or names found on the foreheads of those who are servants of God as well as those who reject God. These marks often show the contrast between these two types of individuals (Rev 7:3; 9:4; 13:16; 14:1; 20:4).

The forehead was also the place where the harlot might advertise her intentions (Jer 3:3; Rev 17:5).
