FORERUNNER (Gr. πρόδρομος, G4596), a hapax legomenon in Hebrews 6:20, the term is classical in origin and has a range of meanings. Although used primarily of military forces who “rush ahead” or of special guides of the army who “attack suddenly” the term is used also in a metaphorical sense for any precursor. The author of Hebrews uses it of the person of Christ into the Holy of Holies (Heb. קֹ֥דֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִֽׁים; Exod 26:33-35; 40:20, 21). This meant that the ancient order of priests which started with Melchizedek (Gen 14:17-20) now came to its fulfillment and completion in the last priest, the Messianic priest-sacrifice. Christ is therefore the precursor of all believers who may now enter into the presence of Jehovah Himself (Rom 8:15; Gal 4:6).
