FRAME.

The Old Testament. 1. Five Heb. words tr. “frame” in the RSV refer to parts of the Tabernacle and Temple or to things inside them. a. מﯴט֮, H4573, (KJV “bar”), a bar or frame from which the lampstand and the vessels of service of the Tabernacle were suspended when they were carried (Num 4:10, 12). b. מִסְגֶּ֫רֶת, H4995, (KJV “border”); a brace around the table of the presence to hold the legs firm in their places (Exod 25:25, 27; 37:12, 14); panels for the stands of the molten lavers in the Temple (1 Kings 7:28-36; 2 Kings 16:17). c. קֶ֫רֶשׁ, H7983, (KJV “board”), the wooden frame of the Tabernacle over which the curtains and skin coverings were spread (Exod 26:15-29; 35:11; 36:30-34; 37:12, 14; 39:33; 40:18; Num 3:36; 4:31). d. שְׁלַבִּֽים (KJV “ledge”), another word for the brace referred to in b. above (1 Kings 7:28, 29). e. שְׁקֻפִים, H9209, (1 Kings 6:4 KJV “lights”; 1 Kings 7:4, 5 KJV “windows”; Ezek 41:16 KJV “windows”).

2. מִבְנֶה, H4445; in Ezekiel 40:2 where the KJV has “the frame of a city,” the RSV has “a structure like a city.”

3. Three Heb. words refer to the human form. a. יֵ֫צֶר֒, H3671, (Ps 103:14). b. עֶ֫צֶמ֒, H6795, (Ps 139:15, KJV “substance”). c. עֵ֫רֶכְ, H6886, (Job 41:12, KJV “proportion”).

4. A number of Heb. verbs are rendered “frame” in either the KJV or the RSV or in both. a. In the famous Shibboleth passage (Judg 12:6) the KJV has “he could not frame to pronounce it right.” The Heb. text, however, has no word for “frame,” and is therefore best tr. by omitting it, as the RSV does, “he could not pronounce it right.” b. צָמַד, H7537, “combine,” “join” (Ps 50:19—KJV “frameth”; RSV “frames”). c. יָצַר, H3670, “form,” “fashion” (Ps 94:20—KJV “frameth”; RSV “frame”; Jer 18:11—KJV “frame,” RSV “shape”). d. נָתַן, H5989, “to give.” In Hosea 5:4, where the KJV has “They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God,” the RSV and most modern trs. regard “their doings” as the subject of the verb; the RSV reads, “Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God.”

The New Testament. 1. συναρμολογέω, G5274, “to fit” or “join closely together” (KJV Eph 2:21—“fitly framed together”; RSV “joined together”). 2. καταρτίζω, G2936, “to fit out” (Heb 11:3—KJV “framed”; RSV “created”).
