Gareb

GAREB gâr’ ĕb (גָּרֵ֖ב; itch, scab). 1. An Ithrite warrior singled out for recognition among David’s “thirty” heroes (2 Sam 23:38; 1 Chron 11:40). According to 1 Chronicles 2:53, the Ithrites were a family of Kiriath-jearim (q.v.), but some scholars prefer to understand Gareb to be a native of the village of Jattir (q.v.), a reading that requires only a change of pointing (see S. R. Driver: Notes on the Hebrew Text of the Books of Samuel, 2nd ed. [1913], 372).

2. A hill not far from Jerusalem, mentioned by Jeremiah as a landmark for the future limits of the city (Jer 31:39). Scholars have not agreed on the site, not even on the direction from the city.
