GARLAND (לִוְיָה, H4292, Prov 1:9, 4:9; פְּאֵר, H6996, Exod 39:28; Isa 3:20; 61:3, 10; Ezek 24:17; στέμμα, G5098, Acts 14:13). These two Heb. words and one Gr. word can carry the meaning of “wreath,” “headdress,” or “chaplet.” While the word “garland” occurs only once in KJV (Acts 14:13), it occurs at least six times in RSV and a number of times in other modern trs. A “garland” or a “wreath” was one of the prizes given to the victor in a particular sports event. The references in Proverbs and Isaiah refer to the headdress of a maiden or woman. It was also at times worn by priests either on the head or as a part of the total dress.

In the Book of Acts “garlands” were among the offerings and sacrifices brought by the priest of Zeus to honor Paul and Barnabas.
