GARNER (אﯴצָר, H238, Joel 1:17; מָ֫זוּ, H4646, Ps 144:13; ἀποθήκη, G630, Matt 3:12; Luke 3:17; all three mean treasury, repository for grain, or barn). The noun use of “garner,” which is now obsolete, has been the tr. of the two Heb. words above. אﯴצָר, H238, occurs frequently throughout the OT and carries the idea of treasure, treasury or storehouse (Josh 6:19; 1 Kings 7:51; Prov 15:16; etc). מָ֫זוּ, H4646, with the same meaning is found only once in the Book of Psalms. The more current trs. tend to be either “granary” or “treasury.” In the NT the noun form has been tr. as “barn” in most modern VSS.

The verbal use of this word with the idea of gathering is more common in Eng. and still used. Both RSV and NASB use it in this way in Isaiah 62:9.
