Gath-Rimmon

GATH-RIMMON găth rĭm’ ən (גַּת־רִמֹּֽון, winepress of Rimmon). 1. A city of the tribe of Dan (Josh 19:45). It was one of four cities of the tribe of Dan allotted to the Kohathites of the family of the Levites (21:24), and designated a city of refuge (1 Chron 6:69). Its probable location is at Tell ej-Jerisheh, four and one-half m. NE of Joppa.

2. A city of the one-half tribe of Manasseh, W of the Jordan, possibly to be identified with Rummaneh, NW of Taanach (Josh 21:25). Many scholars believe that the name came in as the result of a scribal error in recording Joshua 21:25. Verse 24 contains the name of the Danite Gath-Rimmon. If this is true, then the second Gath-Rimmon should in reality be the “Bileam” of 1 Chronicles 6:70. This conclusion is strengthened by the fact that the LXX B in Joshua 21:25 has ̓́Ιβαθα (Bileam). but omits Gath-Rimmon. Bileam is located about fifteen m. SE of Megiddo.
