Geder

GEDER ge’ dər (Heb. גֶּ֖דֶר), a place name, a village of the Canaanites mentioned only in Joshua 12:13 in proximity to Debir (q.v.). The name prob. means “wall” or “bulwark,” and similar names are frequent in the OT, e.g., Gedor (Josh 15:58); Gederah (15:36); Gederoth (15:41, et al.) A citizen of the place, Gederathite, Heb. גְּדֵרָתִֽי, a certain Jozabad, is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 12:4 as one of the men who rallied to David at Ziklag. Since they were all Benjamites Geder must have been located on the Western slope of the Judean hill country in the Shephelah.
