Gephyrun

GEPHYRUN gĕ fī’ run (Γεφυρούν). According to the ASV, the name of a city (2 Macc 12:13), location unknown, which in the latter part of the v. is identified as Caspin, q.v. The KJV takes Gephyrun as an infinitive from γεφυρόω, tr. by the phrase “to make a bridge.” The RSV assumes Gr. γεφύραις (from γέφυρα, bridge, dam, mound), and trs. “with earthworks.” If this account is to be connected with the following campaign, the city may be in Trans-Jordan, possibly Gilead. The city was defeated by Judas Maccabeus. Earlier identification with Ephron depended on Gephyrun being a proper name.
