GIDDEL gĭd’ əl (גִּדֵּֽל). 1. The name of a family of Nethinim or Temple servants who returned with Zerubbabel from the Exile (Ezra 2:47; Neh 7:49). The name Cathua appears instead in 1 Esdras 5:30.

2. The name of one of the families of the “sons of Solomon’s servants” (1 Esd 5:33), who returned with Zerubbabel from the Exile (Ezra 2:56; Neh 7:58). The “sons of Solomon’s servants” were descendants of foreigners or prisoners captured in war who were subjected to forced labor (cf. Josh 9:23; 1 Kings 9:21).
