GIN jĭn (פַּח֒, H7062, trap, snare; מﯴקֵשׁ, H4613, trap, lure, snare). An old tr. of either of two Heb. words, “gin” in the meaning of trap or snare is not used in the RSV or NEB. Properly, פַּח֒, H7062, refers to the trap, מﯴקֵשׁ, H4613, to the lure that draws the victim to the trap (see S. R. Driver on Amos 3:5; Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges, vol. 25, 2nd ed. [1915], 161). The meaning of מﯴקֵשׁ, H4613, also becomes extended from the bait to the snare (Ps 140:5). “Gin” occurs in KJV, Job 18:9; Psalm 140:5; 141:9; Isaiah 8:14; Amos 3:5.
