Gleaning, Glean

GLEANING, GLEAN glēn’ ĭng, glēn. 1. Heb. לָקַט, H4377, pick or gather up, glean, is used of the gathering of grain by the poor, following the reapers, as provided for in the Mosaic law (Lev 19:9; 23:22) and beautifully exemplified in Ruth 2, where the word occurs repeatedly. Boaz’ generosity was rewarded with romance.

2. Heb. עָלַל֒, H6618, do a thing a second time, glean, used of a similar practice with grapes or olives, for which the law is stated (Lev 19:10; Deut 24:21). Concerning grapes (Judg 8:2; Jer 6:9; 49:9; Mic 7:1); concerning olives (Isa 17:6); concerning both grapes and olives (Isa 24:13). In Judges 20:45 KJV, ASV, used of killing men fleeing from a battle; RSV “cut down.”
