GLUTTON, GLUTTONOUS, GLUTTONY (זָלַל֮, H2362, light, worthless). The law whereby a father and mother charged their son with conduct worthy of death (Deut 21:21); the vice rebuked (Prov 23:21). The words were repeated for emphasis (Prov 23:20; 28:7 ASV, RSV). Greek φάγος, G5741, “one who eats,” i.e. “too much” (Matt 11:19; Luke 7:34). The Matthew and Luke references were accusations made against Jesus. Titus 1:12 KJV reads “slow bellies,” ASV has “idle gluttons,” RSV, NEB “lazy gluttons.”
