Gnash, Gnashing of Teeth

GNASH, GNASHING OF TEETH (חָרַק, H3080; βρύχω, τρίζω, βρυγμός, strike or grind the teeth together). The Heb. (poetic) expresses the hate and scorn of enemies (Job 16:9; Ps 35:16; 37:12; 112:10; Lam 2:16). The Gr. βρύχω, G1107, refers to the rage of Stephen’s enemies (Acts 7:54), RSV “ground their teeth.” The Gr. τρίζω, G5563, describes the epileptic’s grating sound by gnashing (Mark 9:18). The Gr. noun βρυγμός, G1106, occurs repeatedly in the sayings of Jesus (Matt 8:12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30; Luke 13:28) concerning the remorseful gnashing of teeth by those excluded from heaven.
