GUEST. 1. OT (קְרֻאִ֖ים; LXX κλητοί, called ones; KJV called; ASV invited, 2 Sam 15:11). A word used to denote persons invited to certain events or occasions—guests of Absalom and Adonijah at their abortive attempts to usurp the throne (2 Sam 15:11; 1 Kings 1:41, 49); guests of a loose-living woman (Prov 9:18); and those who are called by God (Zeph 1:7). The RSV uses “guest” as a free rendering of הָעָ֣מ׃׀ קָרָ֑אתִי, the people (whom) I called (1 Sam 9:24) and of גָּ֘רֵ֤י בֵיתִ֣י, the sojourners of my house (Job 19:15).

2. NT (ἀνακείμενος, one reclining; συνανακείμενος, one reclining or with one reclining; KJV them that [which] sat with him, Matt 14:9; Mark 6:22, 26). A word used to denote persons invited to a banquet or feast—guests at King Herod’s birthday party (Matt 14:9; Mark 6:22, 26); guests in the parable of the wedding feast (Matt 22:10, 11). “Guest” is used in the RSV to tr. οἱ νἱοὶ̀ τοῦ νυμφῶνος, the bridegroom’s attendants (Matt 9:15; Mark 2:19; Luke 5:34), and ἐξένισεν, he received as guests (Acts 10:23).
