Handbreadth

HANDBREADTH (see Weights and Measures. טֶ֫פַח, H3255, handbreadth, palm). Measurement of about three inches based on the width of the hand at the base of the four fingers (cf. Vul. quatuor digitis, Exod 25:25). Three handbreadths equaled a span, and six handbreadths a cubit. An extra handbreadth was found in Ezekiel’s cubit (Ezek 40:5). Used for equipment in the Tabernacle (Exod 25:25; 37:12) and Temple (1 Kings 7:26; 2 Chron 4:5), and metaphorically for the brevity of man’s life (Ps 39:5).
