Hara

HARA hr̂’ ə (הָרָא׃֙; LXX omits). A place to which Tiglath-pileser, the king of Assyria, exiled the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh in 734-732 b.c. (1 Chron 5:26). It is mentioned along with Halah, Habor, and the river Gozan—all places in N Mesopotamia. In 2 Kings 17:6; 18:11, where this exile is also described, Hara is omitted, and in both passages the Heb. text has “cities of the Medes,” whereas the LXX has “mountains of the Medes.” The text of 1 Chronicles 5:26 seems to be corrupt. It is thought by many scholars that the Heb. word for “of the Medes” (מָּדִ֑י) fell out and that עָרֵי, “cities” was changed to הָרֵי, “mountains.” If this is correct, the name designates a mountainous area E of the Tigris River Valley.
