Hat

HAT (כַּרְבְּלָה, H10368). This Aram. word occurs only in Daniel 3:21 among other articles of clothing worn by the three Hebrews in the fiery furnace. It prob. means “helmet, cap” (cf. Akkad. karballatu “pointed caps”) although some prefer “mantle.” Two other items in the v. also are difficult Aram. terms so the context does not help. The verb כִּרְבֵּל, H4124, if indeed it is a denominative appears as a Pual participle mekurbāl in 1 Chronicles 15:27 describing David as “bemantled with a robe of byssus” (BDB, p. 500).
