Hem (Hem of a Garment)

HEM (Hem of a Garment) (שׁוּל, H8767, Exod 28:33, 34; 39:24-26, meaning flowing skirt, train, or hem. Κρἁσπεδον, Matt 9:20; 14:36, meaning border or fringe [of garment]). This was the part of the outer garment which would hang down loosely. It could be on the outer upper garment or on the lower one. In Numbers 15:38f. and Deuteronomy 22:12 the Hebrews were instructed to wear tassels on the four corners of the hem of the outer garment as a constant reminder of the commandments. Aaron’s garment in Exodus 28 was to have golden bells and pomegranates on its hem.

Jesus criticized the Pharisees for their false display of piety by lengthening the tassels on their hems (Matt 23:5). However, the hem or fringe of Jesus’ garment plays an important role with the hemorrhaging woman who believed that she would be healed if she could but touch His hem. Jesus responded to her faith and granted her request (Luke 8:43-48).
