Heres

HERES hĭr’ ĭz (חֶ֔רֶס). 1. הַר־חֶ֔רֶס, “Mount Heres” (Judg 1:34, 35), a district from which the Israelites did not drive out the Amorites; Aijalon and Shaalbim are mentioned with it. A comparison of the passage with Joshua 19:41, 42 indicates that Mount Heres is the same as the town Ir-shemesh, that is, Beth-shemesh.

2. מַעֲלֵ֖ה הֶחָֽרֶס, “the ascent of Heres” (Judg 8:13 ASV, RSV; KJV “before the sun was up”); the place E of the Jordan from which Gideon returned after defeating Zebah and Zalmunna. Both text and topography are uncertain.

3. עִ֣יר הַהֶ֔רֶס. “city of Heres” (Isa 19:18; KJVmg. and ASVmg. “city of the sun,” i.e. Heliopolis), of which it is said that it will be one of five cities in Egypt that will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to Yahweh.
