Heth

HETH hĕth (חֵֽת). The eponymous ancestor of the Hittites, a son of Canaan in the Table of Nations (Gen 10:15; 1 Chron 1:13). Hittites lived in Canaan from patriarchal times until after the Israelite conquest. The wives of Esau are called “daughters of Heth” (Gen 27:46 KJV; RSV “Hittite women”). The Hittites (KJV “sons of Heth”) appear in the story of the purchase of the cave of Machpelah by Abraham (Gen 23; 25:10; 49:32). Rebekah warned Jacob (Gen 27:46; 28:1) about marrying “Hittite women” (KJV “daughters of Heth”), or “Canaanite women” (KJV “daughters of Canaan”).
