HINGE (צִיר֮, H7494, Prov 26:14; פֹּת, H7327, 1 Kings 7:50). The first reference to the hinge comes from the 1st Temple period (1 Kings 7:50). Most of the ancient hinges were of a pivot type which would fit into a socket. As can be seen from above, two words have been tr. as “hinge,” but each one occurs only once in its particular form. צִיר֮, H7494, seems to carry only the meaning of “hinge,” whereas פֹּת, H7327, includes the broader meaning of “opening” or “front.” See Door.
