Huram

HURAM hyōōr’ əm (חוּרָֽם). 1. A grandson of Benjamin (1 Chron 8:5).

2. A king of Tyre, allied with David and Solomon (2 Chron 2:3, 11, 12; 8:2; 9:10, 11). Called Hiram also (2 Sam 5:11; 1 Kings 5:1 through 10:22 several times; 1 Chron 14:1).

3. A Tyrian artificer employed by Solomon (2 Chron 2:13; 4:11, 16); called Hiram in 1 Kings 7:13, 40, 45; “man...of Huram my father’s”; ASVmg. “even Huram my father” (2 Chron 2:13 KJV, ASV), “Huram his father” (2 Chron 4:16 KJV, ASV). In both cases, RSV calls him “Huramabi,” which means “Huram (is) my father.” Elsewhere RSV calls him Huram or Hiram like KJV and ASV. Huramabi may be a fuller writing of his name. The discrepancy between the names Huram and Hiram is due to the similarity between the Heb. letters “u” or “w” (ו) and “i” or “y” (י).
