Huzzab

HUZZAB huz’ əb (הֻצַּ֖ב). KJV tr. of the Heb. form הֻצַּ֖ב (Nah 2:7). Out of context the form is easily understood as a Hophal perfect of the verb נָצַב֒, H5893, meaning “he (or it) is established, settled, determined,” cf. the participle of this stem of the same verb in Genesis 28:12 (מֻצָּ֣ב). In context, however, it is exceedingly difficult. Taken as a verb its meaning fits the sentence with extreme difficulty (without resorting to forced etymologies) and then leaves Nahum 2:7 without a subject. (The verbs in v. 7 are feminine and there is no feminine noun in the context that can function as the subject. The words “gates” and “palace” in v. 6 are masculine.) If it is taken as a noun, its meaning can only be guessed at. Various suggestions have been made, most of them connecting the word by various etymologies either with the Assyrian queen or the city of Nineveh (e.g. the Targum trs. it מַלְכְּתָ֕א “the queen,” and the RSV “its [Nineveh] mistress”). Others have suggested an Assyrian proper name, perhaps that of the queen, but no etymology from Assyrian has even been suggested. The text may be corrupt.
