RABSHAKEH răb’ shə kə (רַב־שָׁקֵ֨ה). Assyrian title meaning “cup-bearer.” Loan word in Heb. from Akkad., rab “chief” and šaqû “to give to drink.” A designation of a court official of high rank. When Sennacherib attacked Lachish, he sent his Rabshakeh to deliver an ultimatum to that city (2 Kings 18:17, 19, 26-28, 37; Isa 36:2, 4, 11-13, 22; 37:4, 8).
