Rehob

REHOB re hŏb (רְחֹ֖וב, רְחֹ֖ב; LXX ̔Ραὰ̀β, ̔Ροωβ, etc.; meaning, broad open place, plaza, market). 1. The father of Hadadezer king of Zobah, whom David smote at the Euphrates (2 Sam 8:3, 12).

2. A Levite signatory with Nehemiah in the covenant pledging reforms (Neh 10:11; v. omitted by LXX).

3. A town or district at the N end of the Jordan Valley marking the limit of the journey of the spies (Num 13:21). During the reign of David it was one of the Aramaean strongholds that sent forces to the aid of Ammon (2 Sam 10:6-8). It is named Beth-rehob (2 Sam 10:6; cf. Judg 18:28). In the topographical list of Thutmosis III, it is prob. no. 87. Its exact location is unknown.

4. and 5. Two border towns in Asher (Josh 19:28, LXX ̔Ραὰ̀β; Josh 19:30, LXX ̔Ρααῦ). One of them was assigned to the Gershonites, one of the families of the Levites (Josh 21:31, LXX ̔Ραὰ̀β, LXX Alexandrinus τὴ̀ν ̔Ροωβ, and 1 Chron 6:75 [Heb 6:60], LXX ̔Ροὼ̀β). Asher was unable to drive out the Canaanite inhabitants of one of them (Judg 1:31). A Rehob is mentioned beside Dor in a list of Ramses II from Amara, and therefore it seems necessary to locate it in the southern plain of Acco (B. Mazar, Yedioth, XXVII [1963], 139-144 [Heb.]). It is perhaps to be identified with Tell el-Gharbi (or Berweh), located c. seven m. E-SE of Acco in the plain (IDB, IV, 29).
