Vedan or Uzal

VEDAN or UZAL VEDAN ve’ dan (וְדָ֤ן) or UZAL u’ zel (אוּזָּ֔ל). Identification may be made with waddan (also called al-’Abwā'), a place between Mecca and Medina, involved in Mohammed’s first expedition. Uzal (Ezek 27:19), a son of Joktan, gives an Arabian locality, prob. the place called Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. An emendation, following the LXX, gives “and wine from Uzal they exchanged for your wares.” Wedān=a cognate of Assyrian dannu, or a large jar or vat used for storing wine. Note also Genesis 10:27.
