VISITATION (פְּקֻדָּה, H7213, ἐπισκοπή, G2175, inspection, a looking over). A visiting by God for the purpose of rewarding or punishing people for their deeds; a demonstration of God’s power, either of blessing (Gen 50:24; Ruth 1:6; Jer 29:10) or punishment (Jer 5:9; Lam 4:22; Hos 8:13). The word פְּקֻדָּה, H7213, tr. visitation in the KJV, is almost always rendered punishment in the RSV. The visitation Jesus mentions in Luke 19:44 is a gracious one; and so also, prob., is the one referred to in 1 Peter 2:12.
