1 Sam 24:5

24:5 David’s heart struck him. Although David later displays the corner of Saul’s robe as evidence of his goodwill towards Saul (v. 11), his pangs of conscience (cf. 2 Sam. 24:10) suggest that a desire to secure such proof may not have been his only reason for going so close to Saul. In view of the royal significance of robes (15:28; 18:4; 19:24 and notes), David may have felt guilty of an inappropriate grasping after the kingship and of an act of aggression against the Lord’s anointed (v. 6). See theological note “Conscience and the Law.”
