30:14 the Negeb of the Cherethites. The Cherethites were probably from Crete. They are often mentioned alongside the Philistines (Ezek. 25:16; Zeph. 2:5). The “Cherethites and Pelethites” served under the command of Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, as professional troops loyal to David (2 Sam. 8:18; 15:18; 20:7, 23) and, for a short time at least, to Solomon (1 Kin. 1:44). They seem to have been the king’s bodyguard (2 Sam. 23:20, 23).
the Negeb of Caleb. Caleb, son of Jephunneh, is first mentioned in Num. 13:6 as one of the spies chosen to scout out the land of Canaan. He is commended in Num. 14:24 as one who followed the Lord “fully” and who therefore would receive an inheritance in the Promised Land. His inheritance included Hebron (Josh. 14:13, 14; Judg. 1:20).
