21:28 Ammonites. From vv. 18–23 it might seem that the Babylonians would attack Jerusalem but spare Ammon. This third and last sword song explains that Ammon too would taste God’s wrath in the fury of the Babylonians (Jer. 49:1–6). Ammon was allied with Jerusalem and Egypt against the Babylonians in 589 b.c. However, when Jerusalem came under attack, Ammon took advantage of her former ally (Jer. 27:3; 40:11, 14; 41:10, 15; cf. 2 Kin. 24:2).
