26:1–28:26 Ezek. 26–28 is devoted to oracles against Israel’s Phoenician neighbors, primarily Tyre (26:1–28:19), but also Sidon (28:20–26). The chapters are divided into subsections, each introduced with the phrase “the word of the Lord came to me” (26:1; 27:1; 28:1, 11, 20). There was occasional military conflict between Israel and the Phoenicians, but the Bible mentions Tyre and Sidon primarily as the source of pagan cults, especially the Baal worship of Jezebel, a Phoenician princess (Judg. 10:6; 1 Kin. 11:1, 5, 33; 16:31; 2 Kin. 23:13). The Phoenicians provided Israel with trade and expert labor (2 Sam. 5:11; 1 Kin. 5:1, 6; 7:13, 14; 9:11; 2 Chr. 2:3, 13, 14; Ezra 3:7; Neh. 13:16; Acts 12:20). Other prophetic books also include oracles against Tyre and Sidon (Is. 23; Joel 3:4–6; Amos 1:9, 10; Zech. 9:2–4).
