32:2 dragon. In the pagan mythology of the ancient Near East, the orderly universe emerges from chaos after a titanic battle between a god and a great sea monster or dragon called “Sea.” After the battle, parts of the universe are created from the carcass of the dead monster. Ezekiel refers to this myth in several places (28:2 note; 29:3–5). Here Ezekiel compares Egypt to the great sea dragon, terrible but destined to be defeated by the Lord.
