8:5 image of jealousy. The image is defined in v. 3 as something that “provokes to jealousy,” that is, provokes the anger of the God who is jealous for His own honor (Ex. 20:5). God’s glory belonged there (v. 4); the idol did not. This idol was probably an Asherah, an image of a Canaanite goddess who was possibly viewed as Yahweh’s consort. Manasseh put an image of this kind in the temple (2 Kin. 21:7).
