2:6 once more . . . I will shake. As is common in the prophets, the near and distant future are telescoped, or compressed together. Here references to the glory of the second temple are juxtaposed with a picture of the final universal judgment on the cosmos. While this shaking may be prefigured by political events occurring shortly after the time of Haggai (e.g., the defeat of Persia by the Greeks), the ultimate shaking of the created order is still to come (Heb. 12:26–28).
