remnant. The gathering of the remnant shows the continuing care of the Lord for His people and His determination to fulfill His covenantal purposes. In the present context, the doctrine of the remnant suggests first of all the breaking off of certain of Judah’s branches (vv. 1, 2; cf. Rom. 11:17–24) following the king’s neglect and the due punishment (Introduction: Characteristics and Themes).

bring them back to their fold. The Lord Himself is now the Shepherd (Ps. 23).
