Jer 31:11

31:11 ransomed . . . redeemed. These verbs are closely related synonyms in Hebrew. The word translated “ransomed” means “to set free by paying a ransom,” and it is used of the Lord’s act of liberating Israel from Egypt (Deut. 7:8; 9:26). The second verb (“redeemed”) is a technical term related to the responsibility of a “close relative” to purchase or “redeem” property which would otherwise be alienated from a family (32:8; Ruth 2:20 note). It is also used of God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt (Ex. 6:6, 7). The way that God has redeemed us to Himself through the ransom of Christ (cf. 1 Tim. 2:5, 6) is explained in the New Testament (see “The Atonement” at Rom. 3:25).
