48:1–47 This chapter records the oracle against Moab; cf. Is. 15; 16; Ezek. 25:8–11; Amos 2:1–3. Moab was an enemy of Israel (Judg. 3:12–14; 2 Kin. 3:4–27). It was an ally of Judah against Babylon (27:3), but supplied troops for Nebuchadnezzar against Jehoiakim (2 Kin. 24:2). Its defeat by Nebuchadnezzar may have come in 582 b.c. following a rebellion.
