Jer 49:1–6

49:1–6 A prophecy against the Ammonites. See Ezek. 25:1–7; Amos 1:13–15. Ammon, an old enemy of Israel (Judg. 11:4–33; 1 Sam. 11:1–11; 2 Sam. 10; 1 Kin. 4:13–19), was located in Trans-Jordan just north of Moab. Like Moab, it was part of an alliance against Babylon (27:3), and like Moab it supplied troops to Nebuchadnezzar against Judah (2 Kin. 24:2). Its hostility to Gedaliah (40:13–41:3) suggests a rebellion against Babylon, probably leading to an attack that virtually ended its existence as an autonomous nation.
