6:9 glean thoroughly . . . the remnant. Farmers were not supposed to glean everything, but to leave something behind for the poor (Deut. 24:19–22); Babylon, however, may “glean” Judah completely (contrast 5:10). The Lord has deeper purposes behind the permission He gives (23:3 note). The curse was not absolute, for God did spare a remnant to fulfill His covenant of redemption (Introduction: Characteristics and Themes). See note 11:23.
